Edinburgh Council Seafield & Bankhead Workshops

In August 2022, Edinburgh endured an eight-day bin strike during one of the city’s busiest periods, with major music festivals placing additional pressure on already stretched waste services. Frontline staff felt overworked, under-resourced, and under-appreciated, while waste build-up became a growing public concern.

JHM Butt received the call from The City of Edinburgh Council, who needed to revolutionise their workflow across the city and ensure both staff and the public were better supported moving forward.

A key challenge was the cleaning and maintenance of commercial vehicles. Waste vehicles, ambulances, fire engines, and other public service vehicles were being sent to an external contractor across the city for washing. The ongoing financial cost and lost time from vehicle downtime and travel could no longer be justified.

In addition, the waste vehicle HQ at Bankhead is over a 30-minute drive from the commercial workshop at the Seafield Depot. This distance meant crews were under pressure to rush jobs in order to transport vehicles across the city for servicing and repairs, impacting efficiency and morale.

Working closely with the council, we implemented a long-term solution to eliminate these issues. We installed an in-house chassis wash system to clean vehicle back ends on site, alongside supplying and installing garage equipment at both the Seafield and Bankhead depots.

These installations have significantly reduced operational costs, minimised vehicle downtime, and freed up valuable time and resources that can be reinvested into other areas of the city.
