Butts 40th Anniversary Celebration
Being in business these days is no easy task. Celebrating 40 years in business therefore is quite an achievement and one to be marked as a special occasion.
On Saturday19th November we marked the date by having a 40th birthday celebration dinner where all the staff and their partners met for an evening of fun, food and laughter. After which we all stayed over at the crown hotel in Bawtry.
The evening itself kicked off with pre dinner drinks until we sat down to watch a short and funny video clip about Butt's of Bawtry and its members of staff. The video is well worth a watch and will make you smile... It can be viewed Here...
After the video we enjoyed a top class five course meal that was absolutely amazing. From Sea Bass to Beef Medallions the food was absolutely outstanding. Staff at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry were absolutely brilliant from start to finish.
When everyone had finished eating we started something that would prove to be one of the highlights of the evening. The Butt's of Bawtry Comedy Awards. These were basically funny awards given to members of staff to highlight some of their habits or funny ways!
We had awards from the worst damage to a company vehicle to being the member of staff who was on the most diets!
As well as comedy awards we did some special awards too to celebrate people who had worked there for almost 25 years, people who had only being off sick for 1 day in 5 years. It really was a fun time and one we will remember for many years to come.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all our customers and suppliers from over the years because without them we would not have been able to achieve this massive milestone.
The next celebration will take place in November 2021 when it will be 50 years!

Profesional Recovery Tow Show 2011
This year was the first time we exhibited at the Recovery Tow Show in Telford.
Well, this year’s show had a little more than a recovery element to it. There was also a Aftermarket Village where major aftermarket suppliers exhibited lifting equipment, diagnostics, smoke analysers and many other aspects associated with garage equipment.
All the major recovery companies were there including the AA and Green Flag as well as exhibitors of lighting, winching, insurers, asset finance and clothing companies displaying their very latest equipment.
We exhibited our latest range of car starters. Our car starters are the most powerful car starters in the world. In fact not only can they start a car, but their range includes jump starters that will start aeroplanes, helipcopters and even MOD battle tanks. Some of the Ceteor range is also MOD and NATO approved.
Car starters have many different names such as portable car starters, battery booster packs, professional boosters, portable battery boosters, booster packs, professional booster packs but in essence they all mean the same thing. However don't be fooled into thinking all booster packs are the same. As the old saying goes.... You pay for what you get!

Battery Booster Packs and Professional Car Jump Starters
Battery Booster Packs, Professional Jump Starters made by Ceteor SOS Boosters and Propulstation
We now distribute a range of professional battery booster packs or as sometimes know car
jump starters. Ceteor make 2 ranges of professional booster packs. SOS and Propulstation. Ceteor claim that they are the most powerful battery booster packs in the world.
Battery boosters should be carried in every vehicle, whether car, van, bus or lorry. They solve the problem of an unexpectedly flat battery and enable the vehicle to be restarted without the need for jump starting (which can damage the delicate electronic components of the modern car). Our range of battery booster packs are used by Roadside Recovery Operators all over the world. They are a professional jump starter which can start cars, bikes, right through to planes, helicopters and battle tanks and boats!
The Car Jump Starter CLAMPS
The negative clamp on most of the boosters benefit from a bright led light so you can easily see what you are doing under the bonnet. Added to this is the bonus of having curved clamps that allow easy access into tight spaces. Our clamps boast Copper wide opening jaws that allow the battery booster pack to work at its best. Copper conducts current much more effectively than other cheaper materials. Also power is fed not only to one side of the boosters clamps but to both jaws via a seperate heavy duty connector. This also means that no current goes through the clamp spring. Over time other boosters clamps get weak due to the spring getting hot and cold. Both of our clamps are completed insulated.
The Jump Starter Cables
Ceteor booster packs also boast double insulated battery booster cables. This means that unlike most cheaper jump starters our cables do not kink or twist or tangle. Our cables will operate in temperatures that range from minus 30 degrees to plus 90 degrees C, and are highly resistant to intensive use. Many booster pack manufacturers are suppling shorter and shorter cables to save money. Our unit has sufficient length so that the booster pack can sit on the floor whilst starting the vehicle. If the booster pack has to sit on the engine as the cables are too short you can imagine what can happen if it falls or moves.
The Professional Battery Booster Packs Casing
Most boosters packs are a two piece case that by definition have to be screwed or bolted together. If this type of booster pack is then dropped, often it will break at those points. The SOS booster packs and propulstation have got around this problem by using a one piece, 5mm thick lightweight yet strong plastic case. This carries a life time guarantee! It also means that you can gain easy access through a back panel allowing you to easily swap components. The two piece system on other boosters often means when you try and replace parts that as you open them parts are falling out as they cannot be easily secured. Many two piece battery booster pack casings are very tight for space and make it difficult to carry out service or repairs. Our boosters are built to last!
Heavy Duty AGM Batteries found in the Booster packs
Our units are manufacturered in Europe and the batteries are top quality AGM batteries made in the USA and can be stored in any position. They give high performance when starting vehicles. An average lifetime of the battery in our booster packs is between 3 and 5 years. This is if the jump starter is used correctly and if it is charged correctly.
Professional Battery Jump Starters Volt Meter
Again as a cost cutting exercise many manufacturers are supplying their battery booster packs with a series on red, green and yellow led lights to show if the booster packs are charged or need charging. We go one step further. We offer a professional illuminated volt meter which tells you exactly what current is in the batteries. Also it acts as a battery tester. Once the booster is attached to the vehicle you can press the volt meter to see if the vehicle's alternator is giving out the correct voltage. This is invaluable when trying to diagnose the problem on the car or van. If for example the alternator is over charging the cars battery then you have not only started the vehicle but also identified that the alternator needs to be changed also.
Charging unit for the professional range of battery booster packs
We used the world renown range of battery chargers made by CTEK. They are a electronic battery charger and are fully automatic. This means that once you have put the booster pack on charge it will charge the battery until it is full. Then will switch off avoiding damage to the battery due to over charging and keeps the battery in perfect condition. Once of the main reasons for premature failure of the battery boosters batteries is incorrect charging. If the batteries are allowed to run flat for a long period of time all batteries will lose power and fail due to the acid eating away at the plates found inside a battery. If charged correctly you can expect many years from your battery booster pack.
All our battery booster packs come with a serial bar code which will give us complete traceability of the booster and its components. The bar code is on the outside of the booster and on the inside too. Meaning when spare parts are required we know exactly what you need. We carry a full range of spare parts here in Bawtry from batteries to clamps, fuses etc.
We offer two types of battery booster packs made by Ceteor.
SOS Boosters
Propulstation
Both models boast all of the above features. However the propulstation goes further still.
The propulstation is a new concept in the world of Battery Booster Packs. The concept behind it is that once the unit is stored in its docking station - It is charged. Given what we have already talked about if the units are not charged, this makes perfect sense.
The advantages are obvious...
1. The unit will last longer as the battery booster pack is always charged at optimum levels meaning you should get nearer 5 years out of the battery.
2. You can spend £1000 on a booster pack but if it is flat when you need it the most - its useless. The propulstation is always charged and always found in its place.
3. If you are in a busy workshop your colleagues may not have put the unit back on charge, or even lost the charger. The propulstation is always in its place.
There are units that do 12 Volt, 24 volt or 12 and 24 volt.
There are also two versions of the propul station docking station. You can either have a station that will be mounted in the workshop (AC/DC) (charging at 230v) or one that will be mounted in a vehicle (DC/DC)(12 or 24 volt)

History of JHM Butt & Company Ltd.
Established: 18th November 1971
Directors at time of establishment:
Alan Kay, Dennis Harrison, Ken Wakerley, Maurice Butt
Original Location:
Disused cinema projection room above Harrisons Motor Services, South Parade, Bawtry.
Site is now a Chinese Restaurant
Moved to Swan Street, Bawtry in February 1975
Moved to current location in 1991
JHM Butt & Company was founded when Maurice Butt, who worked for Burmah Castrol, was compelled to retire because he had reached the compulsory company retirement age.
Maurice already dealt with Dennis Harrison & Ken Wakerley who ran Harrisons Motor Services & together with Alan Kay who was then the Parts Manager of Harrisons Motor Services the four founded JHM Butt & Company.
Initially, due to the very small stock holding of car parts and Garage Equipment, the company was located in a disused cinema projection room above Harrisons Motor Services main buildings which were themselves a converted cinema.
At the end of a very difficult 1st year's trading the Directors were advised by their accountant to close the business as he considered that it would not be a success!
Fortunately this advice was ignored and a few years later a move to larger, though hardly more grand, rented premises was required.
Swan Street was actually a disused stable complex & extensive refurbishment was undertaken to replace ceilings, fit racking & build offices to house the increased stock & a small number of staff.
By this time the staff had increased to 3, Maurice Butt, Alan Kay & Mavis Wakerley Together they worked hard to increase the turnover & profitability of the company.
Ken Wakerley joined the company, leaving Harrisons Motor Services in 1976 and Fraser Wakerley joined in 1978.
The company made steady progress, coping with the 3 day week, the miners strike & successive recessions until in 1990 it became necessary to seek larger premises.
With a successful application to the European Coal & Steel Fund & backed by 3i land was purchased at Station Yard on the site of the old sidings where the Royal Train was occasionally parked when the Queen visited Osburton Estate near Retford.
Building work commenced in 1991 & the company moved during the May Bank Holiday so that by the Tuesday morning trading was commenced from the new premises without any days of business being lost due to the move.
The premises were expanded in 2001 to accommodate a larger volume of stock due to the company importing more products initially from Europe & now from further afield.
JHM Butt & Company has seen many suppliers & competitors come and go over the 40 years it has been trading & while some of the products sold are different to those sold 40 years ago the desire to offer a good service at a fair price is a core value that has not changed & we are pleased that we still retain a number of customers from the early days of the company.
The company has continued to evolve and in 2010 a printing department was started using the latest digital, non solvent based, printing equipment.
Further expansion of the premises is planned for 2011 to accommodate a larger stock of vehicle lifts and to allow the re-location of the printing department as it's output increases.
The company's sights are now firmly set on 2020 & we look to the future with both an enthusiasm to increase the scope of the companies activities & a determination to deal with the challenges that will inevitably need to be overcome.

In conjunction with a local church the Butts lorry some staff, and church members paraded round Langold village (Nr Worksop) on the back the lorry to do a night of carol singing. With keyboards, trumpets and great voices we took to the street to bring a little Christmas Spirit! It was absolutely freezing but everyone enjoyed it - Even the residents of Langold!!

Meet the Garage Equipment team. A team to be proud of. Everyone put in a great deal of hard work and did an excellent job on the day and behind the scenes.

This October we exhibited at the Coach and Bus show for the first time. It was a fantastic show for us and a great opportunity to meet many of our customers as well as display many of our new products.

Set Up Day
Set up day was very interesting! We weren't allowed to use our crane in the NEC so had to unload everything outside and wheel it in! Very character building!

Exhaust Extraction Display
We have a Filcar Exhaust Extraction display that we normally keep in our showroom. This is over 4 metres high and weighs around 500kilo. You can imagine the fun we had getting into the NEC, let alone to our stand!

Ravaglioli Workshop Equipment
As well as Exhaust Extraction we exhibited some of our commercial Ravaglioli Garage Equipment such as mobile columns, commercial brake tester and wheel care products.

It took 2 long days but we got there in the end. However we are not going to give up our day jobs!
